A Minnesota jury has found Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, guilty on all counts for the murder of George Floyd.
At around 4:15 Central Time this afternoon, jurors convicted Chauvin on counts of second-degree unintentional murder, third degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
Today’s verdict comes after a year of immense stress and grief — as reformers, social activists and others have spent months pushing for police reform and justice for George Floyd.
So how do we process today’s decision, and the continuing violence against Black bodies?
Alvin Thomas is an assistant professor of Human Development and Family Studies School of Human Ecology at UW-Madison. As he told WORT producer Jonah Chester earlier today, a guilty verdict in the Chauvin trial is just the beginning of a long and arduous process.
